Winter indoor plant care tips - What do you change?

If you're new to indoor plants and worried about the upcoming Winter season and how it may affect them we're here to settle your mind - your indoor plants are mostly sheltered from the change of season so there isn't anything to loose sleep over but we do have a few tips that can keep your plants happy over the Winter season and potentially help them continue to flourish!

1. Keep your indoor plants in a room that doesn't get too cool -Most of the common indoor plants we collect are tropical and thus don't respond well to temperatures below 16C. You likely have a part of your home that even overnight stays consistently warm - consider moving your plants out of rooms that may be drafty and cold and keep them somewhere they'll barely notice it's become Winter outside!

2. You may need to move plants in your home to a space with better lighting - Plants photosynthesize and need light to thrive (Yes, all plants - even the ones that may have been sold to you as low-light plants). Now that daytime is getting shorter and the sun is not as high in the sky you may need to move your plants' placement to ensure they're getting adequate lighting. A spot that in Summer may be way too harsh may be the perfect spot for a plant now. I'd still keep in mind that the peak sun from 11am-2pm may be a bit hard on a plant with thin foliage so you're better off putting tougher plants like snake plants or hoya in that light.

3. With your plants receiving less light you're going to water less frequently - The amount of light your plant receives and the frequency in which you water go hand in hand. If your plant is now receiving 30-40% less light than a few months ago you're going to notice your plant is drying out more slowly. This is definitely a time where clear nursery pots (Like these ones we have on the site) come in handy so you can follow your plant's exact needs and not water until it is mostly dry or fully dry. This is 100% your sign to ditch the watering schedule!

4. You can continue to use your nutrients - I know a lot of people worry about if they should or shouldn't feed their indoor plants in Winter but our recommendation we covered in this blog post is keep at it - your plant is not experiencing the temperature drop outside so it may be fully happy to continue to receive nutrients! I continue to feed all my indoor plants Foliage Focus and Rootzone (As well as my cacti & succulents inside continue to receive Succulent Focus and Rootzone).

5. You can repot in the Winter - This is a no-no I hear a lot but I can confirm if your plant is happily inside and stays consistently cozy there shouldn't be any issues repotting it in Winter!

The biggest tip I can share is listen and observe your plants - if they're showing signs of stress like yellowing leaves or drooping you may want to check if it's sitting somewhere that gets drafty overnight or if you're watering it too often but your care over Winter shouldn't change too much from other seasons.
