When should I stop feeding my plants?

This is a question we get asked a lot - is there a time of year I should stop feeding my plants? The answer can vary based on a few factors but my general answer is keep feeding them regularly all year round!

Think about it this way - your indoor plants are traditionally in a controlled environment where the seasons they experience aren't the same as what they'd experience outdoors. There isn't a much cooler Autumn and Winter followed by a warm and bright Spring and Summer. You likely keep your home a comfortable temperature that you enjoy year round so your plants are mostly conditioned to a very controlled temperature that supports them growing year around!

Now there are some things you'll need to consider like what type of nutrients you're supplying to your plants:

  • If you're using something like Support Pellets that you add to your soil mix when repotting or top dress, you'll likely top dress less often as your plant is probably consuming the nutrients provided more slowly with it receiving less light in the cooler months
  • If you're using Foliage Focus or another of the Focus range by GT in your water and you currently use it every time you water, keep doing as you're doing! You'll be watering less often as your plant is taking a bit longer to dry out compared to the brighter, warmer months but these can be used year round to keep your plants zooming up a moss pole or getting nice and bushy in their pot

In summary, keep feeding as you're feeding but be prepared to slow down based on other factors like your plant consuming nutrition and water slower, lower light, and potentially a slightly cooler temperature in your home. Your plants will thank you :)
